What is a Stretch Piercing?
A stretch piercing, also known as gauging, is a body modification technique that involves gradually enlarging an existing piercing to create a larger opening. This is achieved by inserting progressively larger jewelry, which stretches the tissue and expands the hole over time.

Guide to Stretching Your Piercing
Preparation
Before you begin stretching your ears, ensure that your piercing is fully healed. Wait at least 2-3 times longer than the healing time of the piercing before starting the stretching process. Alternatively, you can visit a professional piercer for assistance. A professional will typically use a larger needle, a punch, or a taper to stretch the ear to the desired size.
Expansion
When you’re ready to stretch your piercing, it is recommended to use a steel taper, as it does not absorb bodily fluids or bacteria. You may also use materials like glass, but avoid acrylic and silicone unless you are only passing the taper through once before inserting jewelry. There are two methods for stretching: the quick stretch, where you insert the taper once and immediately place jewelry, and the slow stretch, where the taper is gradually pushed further over time. The slow method is less painful, but always use a taper made of steel or glass.
Don’t Rush the Process
Always wait until the previous size has fully healed before moving to a larger size. A general rule is to wait 1-2 months between sizes 0-8 mm, 2-3 months between sizes 8-16 mm, and about 3 months for sizes over 16 mm. Only jump one size at a time, for example, from 2 mm to 3 mm. You may notice that certain sizes, like 7 mm, are missing due to the American Gauge system, which differs from the metric system. However, you can easily follow the available sizes, such as from 6 mm to 8 mm.
Always Use Lubrication
Lubrication significantly eases the stretching process. While a taper is usually smooth, using a gel can help. If gel is unavailable, water can be used, but it is less effective than gel.
Keep Your Ears Clean
Maintaining cleanliness is crucial, especially during the healing process. Many experience odors from their ears during stretching due to bacteria and dead skin cells. Materials like wood and silicone can absorb these substances, so switching to steel may be beneficial if this is a concern. Regularly clean your plugs or tunnels and rinse your ears with warm saltwater for optimal hygiene.
