What is a septum piercing?

A septum piercing is a cartilage piercing located in the area just behind the nose tip. This type of piercing has been practiced for centuries in countries like India and among various tribal communities, where it is often seen as an important form of body adornment. For instance, it is an integral part of the costume for Hindu dancers and is popular among certain Native American tribes.

Cultural Significance

In countries such as India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, septum piercings continue to symbolize status, faith, and religion. In Nepal, it is referred to as “Bulaki” and is worn by women from various ethnic groups.

In Australia, septum piercings were traditionally used as a rite of passage for Aboriginal boys, marking their transition from childhood to manhood. After the ceremony, boys would often move to a men’s camp to learn skills like hunting. This transition celebration frequently included a jewelry gift from their father or grandfather, made from animal bones.

Girls also received septum piercings as a rite of passage into adulthood, often performed by their husbands during marriage.

How is a Septum Piercing Done?

Although classified as a cartilage piercing, a septum piercing is rarely made directly through the cartilage. Instead, it is typically placed in the area beneath the cartilage, known as the “sweet spot” by piercers.

The piercing can be performed with or without instruments, but most piercers prefer to use at least a receiving tube or clamp to hold the needle. Before the procedure, the piercer will determine the placement, disinfect the area to prevent infections, and locate the optimal spot for the jewelry.

Once everything is ready, the needle is inserted at a horizontal angle, and then the needle is replaced with the desired jewelry.

Types of Septum Jewelry

There are many different jewelry designs suitable for septum piercings, making it one of the most versatile types of piercings. Some common jewelry options include:

  • Horseshoe Barbell: Also known as a bull ring, this is the most commonly associated jewelry with septum piercings. It is easy to insert and remove and can even be hidden by flipping it up into the nose. The typical size is 1.2 mm in wire thickness and 8-10 mm in diameter, depending on your anatomy and desired visibility.
  • Piercing Rings: Similar to horseshoes, these come in various designs, including clicker rings, endless rings, and bead rings. They often provide a more elegant and discreet appearance and are available in different colors, materials, and designs. The typical size is also 1.2 mm in wire thickness and 8-10 mm in diameter.
  • Piercing Bars: These are slightly more specialized but can still be used for septum piercings. You can choose between straight or curved bars, often preferred for a very discreet look that is nearly invisible. Many opt for these if they need to conceal their piercing at work or in other situations where visibility is a concern.
